Web servers
According to certain surveys, approximately 35-40 per cent of http services acting in the web run under Linux system and use Apache as a web server. Why is it so popular? Perhaps the most important point is that Apache is free of charge because it was developed under the aegis of GNU licence, for that reason it has all the advantages of open source code softwares. On the other hand, due to the carefully developed modular structure it can be endowed with a lot of qualities by means of different software modules, for example operating translating system of script programming language (php, perl), realising database server connection, securing reliable http connection (SSL – secure socket layer) and so on. Apache provides a great amount of opportunities and competes with many commercial web servers.
Mail servers
The electronic mailing is one of the oldest but, up to this day, the most popular service of Internet. The email service has become more comfortable and easily usable by the acquired features of protocols (ex. MIME). Beyond the features we have to take into consideration that this service has enabled some sort of viruses to spread. These viruses could have been spreading either because of the security deficiency of the mailing client softwares or the naivety of the users (the most frequent cases are the malicious applications sent as attachements or the malicious scripts and macros using client softwares). At the same time when the diffusion of emails started, the word ˝spam˝ received a new meaning. Day by day enormous amount of unrequested advertisements circulate in the web due to incompletely set mailing servers. They are sent either by humans being up to anything or softwares being especially developed for ˝spamming˝. One of the oldest mailing demons is the sendmail. However it has come through several versions and security mistakes, most people use this program, perhaps because they don’t even know any other alternative. Among the most significant developments we can mention the ˝qmail˝ which is considered as ˝the safe sendmail˝ because it was created with this aim. It is used by several Hungarian Internet Service Providers. We have to draw your attention to two very good GNU free softwares, the one is called postfix, the other is exim. They represent a higher level both in their services and in their qualities than the old sendmail. To decide which one you should use in a certain situation, depends on the function and the usage of the server. First of all you have to clarify the needs and then choose the suitable tools. Firewall
Recently the security technology of computer networks is becoming more and more important. This is understandable because about 30 years ago when the four layer tcp/ip network architecture was created (derived from the seven layer OSI model), its developers couldn´t imagine how huge process they have launched, for that reason security details were not included in the planning process. The specialists of arpa have been rather working on the operability of their packet-switched network. By now because the TCP/IP has achieved a never seen popularity, it became clear that the operability is not enough. However the constantly developing IPSEC technology tries to eliminate this deficiency but it needs some time to spread. This topic is huge but briefly we can tell that two types of firewall exist: one of them operates on network level and called ˝packet filter˝, while the other operates on application level (different protocol proxies, tcp wrappers). The previous one operates on low level, for its installation a great deal of experience is needed because we have to think on the level of IP packages, not even on incoming and outgoing connections. We have to define by the source address, the source port, the target address, and the target port of IP packages and by other data (ex. whether it is a package initiating the connection) that which package should be admitted, sent or cancelled on our network. The second category operates on application level and it can be used for rather regulating the workstations of our LAN than for avoiding the external, malicious attacks. A good example for this type is the web proxy which can operate so that it does not allow to download certain urls and web addresses by a constantly updated database.
